A strange thing
about Greenland is that it isn’t very green. 85%
of the country is covered in ice.
Tapescript:
So why call the world’s biggest island Greenland?
One theory is that the name dates back to the explorer
Eric the Red, who arrived around 980 AD. Eric came from
Iceland so perhaps Greenland was his idea of a sunshine
paradise island. And it is true that Greenland was a
few degrees warmer back then.
If Eric the Red came back to Greenland today, he may
not notice many changes. There are no trains or roads
connecting towns. There are still no grass football
pitches, either. That’s why FIFA, the world
football body, won’t allow Iceland to join.
And Eric can easily look up his relatives. Every family
in Greenland can be found in one thin telephone
directory, including former foreign and finance
minister Aleqa Hammond.
Ms Hammond, who may become Greenland’s first
Prime Minister, will be happy to show you the wolf-skin
head that hangs from inside her front door
